The Agents That Teach Us

Gender bullying, stereotyping, or bias is not an avoidable aspect of life. Most children will experience some form of this in their early years. These children are exposed to these biases from home, school, and just about any other public environment they enter. They are subjected to them in the things that they are encouraged to do as well as discouraged from doing. Children pick up on these hints, no matter how subtle, and begin to identify and define themselves. “Through all these socialization agents,” Susan Witt writes, “children learn gender stereotyped behavior. As children develop, these stereotypes become firmly entrenched beliefs and thus, are a part of the child's self-concept.”
